I love the summer here in Minnesota because that means fresh fruit and veggies at the farmers market. I typically go once a week and grab enough food till the week after. I have noticed that if I don’t wash and the cut the veggies, they won’t be eaten. So I now prepare a day to go get the food, cut it, and put them containers for an easy grab. I like being prepared, and so do others. So one tip I can give you, is as soon as you get your veggies and fruit, wash them and put them in containers. It will help make sure you get your fruits and veggies in for the day. I have a recipe that you can use to make your own Fruit and Veggie Wash, super cheap and handy!
You never know what kind of pesticides, insects or dirt may be lurking on the surface of your favorite fruits and vegetables. That’s why it’s always a good idea to thoroughly wash all your produce before eating it. Although washing with plain water can accomplish a lot, adding some natural sources of acid (namely lemon and vinegar) to the wash can provide a bit of additional, natural disinfecting power. Follow these easy steps to find out how to make a fruit and vegetable wash that is both inexpensive and completely organic.
Steps:
Prepare the organic lemon. You can use a normal lemon, which would be slightly cheaper, but the wash couldn’t be called “organic”, just “natural”. Regardless, both kinds of lemons will be fine for the task.
* Slice the lemon in half.
* Squeeze out one tablespoon of lemon juice into the spray bottle. The lemon juice is both a natural disinfectant and will leave your fruits and vegetables smelling nice.
* Pour 2 tablespoons of vinegar into the spray bottle along with one cup of water. The vinegar provides some additional disinfectant power.
* Screw on the top. Shake the mixture vigorously.
* Spray the wash on all of your fruits and vegetables prior to using them. After each spray, rinse it off. They’re now ready to eat or use in cooking.
