I’ve got a question for you. For you and only you. You may be surprised, it may be a difficult one to answer. “What do you like to do?” My husband asked me this a few years ago, and it surprised me. “What do you mean?” I asked. “Like your hobbies, what are things you like to do?” He asked. I didn’t have an answer. I didn’t know what I liked to do anymore. I had gotten so wrapped up in being a Mom, I didn’t have an answer for him. Not only that, I couldn’t figure out how or when I would fit another thing into my life.
Being a mother is the best job ever! We take care of our children morning, noon and night, get dinner on the table, and let’s not forget the loads of laundry. Somewhere along the line we have forgotten something. We forget, after time, about ourselves. Who we are, what we like to do, the hobbies we have enjoyed. It kind of gets left in the dust bunnies, under the dresser along with that earring you can’t seem to find. We need to start making time and taking care ourselves.
When you start doing something for yourself, you will feel a sense of refreshment. I have been in a place where I was so burnt out, I always felt tired and exhausted. I didn’t know how I was going to do it but I knew something needed to change. I started making time for myself. No, it wasn’t extravagant. I didn’t even leave the house. After the kids went to bed, I would take an hour and have “me” time. I had a goal of losing some weight, and I just started from home. I got a simple dvd and that was “me” time. Before I knew it, I was feeling a new sense of accomplishment, self-confidence, and most importantly, I had energy again. I was less tempered, and stress went away. Your goals can be anything you want them to be. It can be organizing your home, learning a new language, taking an online course, or as simple as getting through a book you’ve wanted to read. The point is just making time for yourself. If evenings don’t work, get up an hour early in the morning, to just have some quiet time and get yourself ready before the chaos begins.
If you don’t know where to start, take a moment to make a list and write some hobbies that you may have enjoyed in the past. Are these hobbies still something you enjoy? Are there goals you want to accomplish? Is there something that you have wanted to do but haven’t had the guts to do? It’s time! Let’s start working towards your goals, hobbies, and interests!
